Two men have been arrested after the burglary of a Goleta area home, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department.
41-year-old Joe Luis Lopez was arrested for felony residential burglary, felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges stem from a series of robberies committed by Lopez, one of a gun safe belonging to his recently deceased neighbor.
The original robbery was reported on August 3rd, at a house on the 4600 block of Atasco Drive. Detectives found that the safe had been moved from the house to Lopez's home next door, then to another location. On August 18th, a warrant was served at a home on the 5000 block of Ella Lane, which turned up nearly three dozen firearms, at least 30 of them linked to the original burglary.
The owner of the Ella Lane house, 36 year-old James Dunning, was also arrested in the case. He has been charged for being under the influence of a controlled substance, felony possession of stolen property, felony possession and/or sale of assault weapons, and felony possession of a deadly weapon.
Bail for both of the men has been set at $50,000. Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this robbery and subsequent arrests, and we are glad that a speedy investigation kept the guns off our streets.
