Man Arrested for Raping Unconscious Woman in Santa Barbara Elevator

Posted on Feb 14, 2012

On January 20, 2012, the Santa Barbara Police Department received a call from an electronic technician of the City of Santa Barbara Downtown Parking. According to police, the technician was reviewing elevator security camera photos from an elevator located at 900 Chapala Street in Santa Barbara when he noticed a parking employee bring an unconscious woman into an elevator and repeatedly rape her. The technician called the police and sent photos of the attack.

According to police, the photos show the suspect bringing the unconscious victim into the elevator and assaulting her over the course of an hour before leaving. The victim then remained on the floor for over three hours.

The suspect, Anthony Vasquez, 19, was tracked down by police and arrested in a downtown park. After interviewing the suspect, police were able to locate the victim. Vasquez, a felony probationer, was arrested for rape and other sexual charges on the 23-year-old woman.

This was a complex investigation and police credit the electronic technician, as they would never have known about the incident if the electronic technician had not carefully reviewed the photos and reported the incident.
