Bank Robberies Down in 2011 Despite Santa Barbara & San Luis Obispo

Posted on Feb 20, 2012

Recent reports from the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office indicate that the number of bank robberies increased in 2011 in the counties of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. The number of bank robberies doubled in Santa Barbara County, from six in 2010 to 12 in 2011, while the number in San Luis Obispo County increased from zero in 2010 to two in 2011. The number of bank robberies decreased elsewhere throughout the FBI’s Central District area, which includes Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino.

Laura Eimiller, Public Affairs Specialist, credited the overall decrease in the number of bank robberies to cooperation between various law enforcement agencies, successful prosecution and a proactive approach taken by banks for additional security measures. The FBI also credits the media for publicizing the increasingly clear bank surveillance photographs and encouraging the public to come forward.

According to the FBI, police responded to 287 bank robberies in the Central District area in 2011, 34 of which included hostages. This number also decreased from 2010.

However, recent data from this year shows that the number of bank robberies is increasing in the Central District area. As of January 2012, 40 bank robberies had already occurred.

The FBI is looking to identify ten robbers who targeted banks in the Central District, including one thief in particular, the Geezer Bandit. This suspect robbed banks in Goleta, Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo, among other areas, in 2011. According to the FBI, the suspect is an elderly man wearing a mask and synthetic hands.
